What is “Dog Training a Woman's Way™”?
Here's why specialized dog training “a woman's way” matters:
- Dogs recognize gender differences
- In canine culture, top leaders are male
- When a woman tries to “act male” to control her pet dog (loud voice, aggressive techniques, harsh scolding, etc.), she is not believable to the dog and her attempts to control or lead in this manner are commonly ineffective. Likewise, if she is too permissive.
Now if we’re teaching a simple performance like Sit, Down, Heel or Roll-Over, the training process is not much different for men or women. However, if we are talking about true obedience – getting a dog to give up what he wants and do what you want instead – that’s where the cookie meets the road. Obedience is not about knowledge. It’s about power and deference to hierarchy. It’s not about what the dog knows. it’s about who’s asking and their hierarchical right to do so. A dog must believe you outrank him before he defers his will to yours. This is where most training programs miss the mark, especially for women. They tend to rely more on rewards than on leadership and do not show a woman how to properly achieve a natural leader position in her relationship with her dog – meaning, leadership based on Nature’s quiet strength and follow-through, with no intimidation.
